A new version of the secret track from Monkey Swallows the Universe's first album "The Bright Carvings" (Thee SPC, 2006).
To celebrate 10 years since that album's release, MSTU present Sheffield Shanty II / Groucho as a digital-only single. The full folk-pop five-piece will also play a one-off show at Queens Social Club in Sheffield on Easter Sunday, 27 March 2016: www.facebook.com/events/528363097341573/
lyrics
You love me like a fashionable liberal loves an Eastern European dissident
You love me like an existentialist loves an empty room that nobody can see inside, that nobody can see inside
You love me like a nihilist loves absolutely nothing at all
You love me like Roderick Usher and I'm locked up now
As the walls are falling down, the walls are falling down
(Ahhh)
You never got the hang of oral sex
The whole procedure was a pain in the neck
Never got the hang of awkward silences
Never read those looks of keep your distances
Of keep your distances
In this light you look like Odysseus lashed to the mast of your own creation
In this light you look like Yossarian bandaging my arm as my guts are spilling out, my guts are spilling out
(Ahhh)
You love me like David Cameron loves discretion as a trait in an abbatoir tour guide
You love me like a nihilist loves absolutely nothing at all
Looks to me like all the newspapers seem the same as last decade's newspapers
And you love me like a market researcher loves to ruin my day

This is the last Nat Johnson release I'm purchasing... well, today, that is. There are still several on my wishlist. This musical triptych is another gem in my collection. It appears to me that each of the sisters is represented by an individual instrument: Anne by the violin, Emily by the piano, and Charlotte by the accordion. I have no idea where Nat Johnson picks up all those incredible melodies and chord progressions. It seems she's living in a parallel universe where music is the ubiquitous ether, and she just breathes it in. Sven B. Schreiber

Yes, obviously I'm buying various items from Nat Johnson's back catalog right now. This comprises "Monkey Swallows the Universe", "Nat Johnson & the Figureheads", and, of course, her solo works. The triplet of songs on this EP also appears on the live album "Roving Women: Nat Johnson plays Connie Converse (live at the Lexington with Cornerstone Brass)", besides lots of great Connie Converse covers in addition to "Talkin' Like You". The brass arrangement on "Condor" simply sweeps me away, and I can tell you that the live version of this song is just as amazing. Sven B. Schreiber

What a splendid folk rock album... one of my favorite works of Nat Johnson. Actually, it's exactly this album that led me to her Bandcamp archive. I was searching for the collaborations of Hannah Browne, a member of the "Early Cartographers", and found her playing flute and horn on "Not Now, Horse". A lucky coincidence that triggerd several additions to my collection. Sven B. Schreiber
