Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) "Monkey Swallows the Universe" was Nat Johnson's first band back in 2006/2007. Unfortunately, the albums "The Bright Carvings" and "The Casket Letters" are difficult to get at the time of this writing, so this nice live recording of a 2016 reunion gig is sort of a temporary remedy. The songs are presented faithfully unplugged, led by Nat Johnson's trademark vocals (except for Kevin Gori's "Groucho", which is sung by himself), accompanied by acoustic guitar, strings, percussion, and - if I'm not mistaken - a melodica... well, it might be an accordion as well. Favorite track: Down (live at Queens Social Club).

An accident, a little slip You know I hardly noticed So come again, so come again A stammered word, forgotten line A question from a past time So come again, so come again Get it together, sometime in beautiful never Cos I'm not coming home tonight I will forgive, I will forget I will be lying now, you bet The choice is yours, the chance is yours But chances are you think it's far enough To stay right where you are The choice is yours, the chance is yours Get it together, sometime in beautiful never Cos I'm not coming home tonight We're all doing something Won't you just do something? No, you'll never get it right

It's so cold in your arms I fall asleep on your bones Time's come and gone, it's early The blinds are down on me Lay still, lay deep, lay long now Welcome all your weaknesses home now I want to answer and you're making me come I do not weep, you stay young For someone might take you away For reasons for which I can't complain So you can wallow in what I made for myself You can wallow Your darkest days you'll spend here Your brightest dream you'll leave here My love, my one, be happy It's only time, it's only time Forget that I, I'm nothing that you want Pretend that I, I'm something you could love I'm tired of sleep, talk to me I do not weep, you kill me For someone might take you away For reasons for which I can't complain So you can wallow in what I made for myself You can wallow

At the speed of one white cloud At the end of one big sound That's how we run, over the ground And we talk without a sound When we fall we were already down You're the only fun I have You're the everyone everyone else has And so we run, over the ground And we talk without a sound When we fall we were already down Oh I always knew there'd be someone like you

I time my day and plan my route for a glimpse of your shoes But I do not see if you see me I stare at the floor as you move through the door But I won't suffer at all if I don't catch your eye And there's no chance of this with all your fingers in pies So you don't see anything, anything, honey And I don't feel anything, anything, anything And on my way each day I think of all the things I could say To make you see how nice I can be But then you come my way and I've nothing to say But I won't suffer if I don't say anything bad So I'll keep my mouth closed though it's making me sad And you don't hear anything, anything, honey And I don't feel anything, anything But if I touched your hand, would you understand That it's me that you need? While I wait patiently But I won't suffer if I keep my hands to myself Though you're slipping away while I'm nailed to the shelf And you could have anyone, anyone, honey You'll probably have everyone, everyone, honey While I dream of only one, only one, only one

Avast! They're leaving town two by two As the rain pours down and we're all soaked through And as they march away, two by two It's like we need an ark for the rest of us So I'll cut my hair short And I'll make a flag from an old black dress That I'd have worn if it hadn't rained so much That the seven hills became seven seas And I'll sail my house from Broomhill to Walkley Pretty Polly is a pigeon She's got a gammy leg and she'll eat anything I've got an eye patch with a hole in Cos I don't need to navigate by stars - I use the road signs and the Arts Tower Still, the rains come So I'll cut my hair short And I'll make a flag from an old black dress That I'd have worn if it hadn't rained so much That the seven hills became seven seas And I'll sail my house from Crookes to Don Valley You can be my cabin boy and I can be your long lost pal I can call you Eddie And Eddie when you call me you can call me Captain So I'll cut my hair short And I'll make a flag from an old black dress That I'd have worn if it hadn't rained so much That the seven hills became seven seas And I'll sail my house from Fulwood to High Green

You love me like a fashionable liberal loves an Eastern European dissident You love me like an existentialist loves an empty room that nobody can see inside, that nobody can see inside You love me like a nihilist loves absolutely nothing at all You love me like Monte Cristo and I'm locked up now But wait until I get out, wait until I get out (Ahhh) You never got the hang of oral sex The whole procedure was a pain in the neck Never got the hang of awkward silences Never read those looks of keep your distances Of keep your distances In this light you look like Odysseus lashed to the mast of your own creation In this light you look like Yossarian bandaging my arm as my guts are spilling out, my guts are spilling out (Ahhh) You love me like David Cameron loves discretion as a trait in an abbatoir tour guide You love me like Julian Assange loves the Embassy's supply of Ferrero Rocher Looks to me like all the newspapers seem the same as last decade's newspapers And you love me like a market researcher loves to ruin my day

In a garden that was once so neat There's an old well where I take my seat One day I found that I was not alone Jimmy had fallen into the well! Well I'm not sorry that you fell Gimme your hand, Jimmy down the well Never forget I was the one, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy You must be legally mine cos I saved you You'd have been dead and I'd be without you Now you'll come everywhere that I go Or you're going back - back in the well, Jimmy Well I'm not sorry that you fell Gimme your hand, Jimmy down the well Never forget I was the one, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy
